You don't need to remember your old one. Or you can open the game and click on Reset Password below the sign-in. A new one will be sent to the e-mail address that is associated with your account. By default, that'll be the e-mail address making up your user name.
I have the same problem, no issues on my main account which is through the Arenanet launcher, but in Steam i cannot log in. It says account name and password is invalid. If i try to recover the account it takes me to the password reset page but that's useless as you login via Steam?
Also, if you have any friends who currently play the game, they may still have a character name listed in a friendslist or guild. That said, Anet will surely process your request if you have other sufficient information to show you are the account owner.
Steam would captured my screen shots and log my time played, so if I ever changed pcs or reformatted all my pictures are saved in steam, 1 password to remember. For me the diagnostic results when starting with -diag show early problems for pinging/tracing 64.25.39.1 - early after leaving my router.
